Preview by Gokul Gopal Pakistan and Sri Lanka face off at Abu Dhabi in the opening match of the three Test series with both teams hoping to gain early momentum. 'Hosts' Pakistan as well as Sri Lanka have squads that are blend of youth and experience and the UAE conditions will put the temperament of the youngsters under test. Opportunity to move up the rankings: Sri Lanka currently occupy the fifth position in the ICC Test rankings with 103 ratings points, while Pakistan are nine ratings points behind and are placed sixth. Sri Lanka only need to win the series to leapfrog fourth-ranked Australia while Pakistan need to win by a 2-0 margin or better if they want to move ahead of Sri Lanka. Pakistan: Misbah ul Haq-led Pakistan will be entering the series as a confident unit, having white-washed Zimbabwe recently in all formats of the game. Although they did face a comparatively weaker opposition, Pakistan too did not have a full strength squad, opting to give an opportunity to a few inexperienced bowlers instead. But they now have a powerful bowling line-up with Umar Gul and Wahab Riaz returning to the squad to take on Sri Lanka. The pace department also contains the likes of Junaid Khan and Aizaz Cheema, who proved their capabilities with the ball during the Zimbabwe tour. Saeed Ajmal leads the spin attack with Abdur Rehman to support him. Seasoned campaigners Younis Khan and Misbah lead the batting line-up which also has talented players like Mohammad Hafeez, Azhar Ali and Asad Shafiq. Pakistan decided to drop Umar Akmal from the squad and it is unlikely that he would be missed as there is a good competition for places in the team with players eager to make it count. Misbah will be hoping for his side to perform in a disciplined manner and put the pressure on Sri Lanka straight away. Sri Lanka: The team from the Island Nation has not won a Test, losing three and drawing eight Tests, since the retirement of spin-legend Muralitharan. Sri Lanka's bowling had mainly revolved around Murali and Malinga (who has also retired from Tests), and they were sorely missed by the team which lost back to back series against England and Australia. Sri Lanka also suffered a setback even before the start of this series when Shaminda Eranga, who performed well in the recently concluded series against Australia, was ruled out due to a shoulder injury. The onus now is on Chanaka Welegedara, who is the spearhead of the Lankan pace attack, with Suranga Lakmal to lend him support. The Lankan skipper Dilshan will also be hoping that the spinners Rangana Herath and Suraj Randiv do their bit. If Pakistan's strength is bowling then Sri Lanka's main weapon is the batting with the experienced trio of Dilshan, Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara. Paranavitana and Prasanna Jayawardene are also quality batsmen, quite capable of coming up with big scores. Sri Lanka also have a good all-rounder in Angelo Mathews, who gives that added strength to the middle order apart from his ability with the ball. All Dilshan will be hoping is that his side's win drought ends at Abu Dhabi. Pitch: The bowlers from the both sides might have to toil as the pitches in the United Arab Emirates have generally been on the slower side, aiding the batsmen more. But spinners do have a role to play with the wickets offering turn on the fourth and fifth days. How many of you expected this after Misbah chose to bowl first? The wicket wasn't a nightmare for the batsmen but Sri Lanka have made it seem that way. Cheema, Ajmal and Junaid were terrific with the ball and restricted Pakistan with a disciplined show, Junaid helping himself to a maiden 5 wicket haul in the process. Only Angelo Mathews showed some spirit and batted with the tail to push Sri Lanka to 197. Not sure if it will be enough, the track is a good one for batting.
