Merseyside Cricket Club Bowled Over With Competition Win

Hightown CC celebrate their competition win

Hightown Cricket Club has stumped the competition to win a once in a lifetime prize of an exclusive coaching session with Lancashire County Cricket Club players and former-England Head Coach, Peter Moores thanks to Thwaites.

The local cricket team who play in the Liverpool & District Cricket Premier League, entered the Thwaites competition which involved teams telling the Lancashire-based brewer, who are the official sponsors of Lancashire CCC with their Wainwright beer, why their team deserved to win.

From the many entries received, Hightown CC emerged as an all out winner, describing how they lost their beloved pavilion when it was burnt to the ground in January. Despite this setback the club has continued to play cricket thanks to the use of temporary changing facilities provided by Workington Cricket Club. 

Former England and Lancashire wicket keeper Warren Hegg picked Hightown CC to receive the once in a lifetime prize. Commenting on the selection, he said: "There was so many deserving entries, however, Hightown really stood out. Despite losing their pavilion the club has shown real resilience and determination in the face of adversity to continue playing in the area’s most prestigious league at both senior and junior levels.

"Peter Moores and the players are really looking forward to putting them through their paces and passing on a few pointers. I’m sure they will all have a memorable day."

Hightown CC Chairman Chris Scrine said of the win: "It has been a really tough year for everyone connected with the club so we were delighted to hear the news that we had won the opportunity to train with Lancashire County Cricket Club.

"Members of the team are really looking forward to the session and we aim to use the tips and skills we learn on the day to improve our game and help us finish the season in a rich vein of form."

Thwaites Commercial Director, Sue Allen added: "Hightown really deserves this opportunity to train with the Lancashire County Cricket stars. The coaching they will receive will hopefully help the team end the season on a real high after a very difficult few months."

The prize includes a behind the scenes tour of Old Trafford plus a full training session with Lancashire players and coaches.

Afterwards the players will be able to enjoy some well-earned pints of Wainwright in a private bar at Old Trafford.
