
As previously reported, the tournament will run from 4th April until 27th May with both the opening match and an opening ceremony, on 3rd April, in Chennai.
However, the format of the competition is yet to be finalised - following the expulsion of the Kochi Tuskers Kerala franchise, the council has asked the management team to report back with what options are available for a nine-team tournament.
A statement from the Board of Control for Cricket in India read as follows:
"The Governing Council has asked the Management team to come back with options for the format and structure for the 2012 season of the tournament.
"The Governing Council also approved various operational items for the forthcoming IPL season.
"The player regulation and trading modalities will be discussed at the next meeting of the GC."
Chennai Super Kings beat the Mumbai Indians in the 2011 competeition to claim their second successive title.
